Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Food is/was an emotional outlet. I used it to give me a sense of comfort when there is no one around to talk to or just enjoy time with. It seemed the fatter I got the less friends that I had. I couldn't do the things that require being in good shape, i.e. walking long distances.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I can't look at myself in a mirror. My self esteem has disappeared. When I look in the mirror I don't see me anymore. I see this person who is not who I want to be. My fiance' says he still sees that girl from high school 20 years ago..which is sweet but I don't see her.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I have not had it yet. Just starting the process now.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I had seen a documentary on tv and thought wow..that might work and then I started a new job about 8 years ago and there were quite a few women who were having it done or already had it done..the changes were amazing.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I have not gotten there yet.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

Have not met with any surgeon as of yet.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and I refuse to die because I didn't try all my options to lose weight. I have tried alot and now I need help..Asking for it is the hardest.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I am leaning towards the sleeve.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I have had a friend who has had complications and that scares me alittle. However, I feel that I am still really optimisic about having the procedure. I have had heard more success than failure stories.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

My fiance' wants me happy but wishes it wasn't through surgery but he has stood by and is willing to make sure I am succesful at losing the weight so I can have the surgery. My sons are totally supportive.

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

My boss is supportive. He is happy for me and wants me to feel good.

What was it like attending your first information seminar on weight loss surgery? Were you glad you attended? if so, why?

At first I was scared and then as I listened to the doctors I became more confident that this would work for me.
