Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have struggled with my weight since Junior High School. As the years went by, it seemed my weight just kept creeping up. I was so depressed, I didn't like myself. I felt like everyone had their eyes fixed on me. My self esteem didn't exist, I just tried to stay "behind the scenes". I read an article in a magazine about this surgeon who performed this surgery, and just imagined what it would be like to be able to have that surgery done. When I was in my early twenties, I tried all kinds of diet fads and of course failed all of them.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Just feeling scrutinized about being overweight. It (is)/was like being under an magnifying glass. Being overweight/obese in America is and always be unacceptable. People tend to treat you differently, even though on the inside you're just like them.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

My greatest accomplishment is just becoming healthier. I'm able to walk without becoming short of breathe. I'm still getting used to getting compliments, and having my picture taken. But most of all, I enjoy being around my daughter and her friends. I use to feel like I was an embarrassment to her.
