Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I've been heavy basically all my life. I've tried many different diets and 'life changing eating habits' all to no avail. I love to cook and I enjoy feeding people. In 2008, my weight almost hit 400lbs and it scared me half to death. I remember going through my pantry and getting rid of all the junk. I went to the grocery store and bought fat free milk and just about any sugar free items i could find. i started walking and i lost about 25lbs. I hit a plataeu for a few months and begged my doctor for a diet pill. he refused and that frustrated me. My late father had diabetes and I've always been afraid of ending up like him. I started looking into the lab band but I lost my job and insurance before I had the chance to get it. I had to make a major transition in my life and in the process, i picked up some horrible eating habits. over the next few years i got as big as 423lbs. those numbers scared me and again i went on a diet. I got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2011. I had a numbness in my right leg which i thought was related to my significant weight gain. After falling a few times, I decided to talk to my doctor about the weight loss surgery because I feared having a significant fall at my size. I knew that having a broken ankle or leg or even hip at my size could be months of healing. i'm now down to 382lbs. i am scheduled for surgery in 10 days.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being able to work out the way i would want to. Flying on an airplane is pretty uncomfortable as well. there is the fear of waking up with diabetes and or high blood pressure.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

scheduled surgery 10 days from now
