Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

my struggle started as a child, and i was not comfortable around people, i did not date, i was the but of jokes, so i stayed depressed all the time, and cried all the time, and this has been my whole life.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

not being normal, like going places with friends or family, i could not fit in , and having no energy.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

heard about it on news, i started researching it online years ago, but had no insurance or money, so i basicly got more depressed, i loved the idea of it, i need a life changing event for my health

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

well, i'm waiting on my approval, but dr. dewitt seems pretty optimistic, so i'm praying for the best, my advice is don't give up!

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

it was very nice and laid back he explained everything to me and my husband, and gave us the oppurtunity to ask anything we wanted to, he was very cool. to get the most out of it, listen and ask questions.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

my failing health, i take 18 meds a day and i'm 36 years old, i want to be healthy, and active again.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

i researched all them and then talked to dr. dewitt and he ageed on gastric bypass.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

i worried that there would be a problem with excess bleeding, but now i'm alot more comfortable with it, and i take the risk of dying either way, whether i have it or not. i would tell people to do alot of research, and talk to your doctor.
