Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I am having gastric bypass surgery tomorrow, and right now I'm starting to feel anxious, scared, nervous, excited. Just a bunch of mixed emotions going on. I started this journey in Jan, 12, Takes awhile to get everything done and all the appointments meant. But it is finally here. I am trying to stay strong right now and not break down, I don't want my kids to be scared. I would love to chat with a few people in my situation, maybe help each other out along this process.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight is not being able to do the things that normal size people do. Like sit in a booth at a restaurant , without having to ask for a table , or a chair with no arms. Go to an amusement park, go swimming ( without being embarrassed ) , shop for cute clothes, ride bikes, fit into the seat at a concert, the list is endless. I hope to enjoy these things once again.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I have gastric bypass tomorrow, July 31, 2012.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I have known about bariatric surgery for years now, and my doctor advised me about 5 years ago to get it done. Took me this long to finally get up enough courage to take the plunge. I am so ready to do this now, I'm ready for my new life to begin. I am anxious to share my journey with you all on here, and hopefully meet some friends along the way.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I think what finally made me decide to have the surgery is a couple things, I could no longer go shopping with my girls, my back would hurt too bad, didn't want to leave the house. I went to the ER with a severe bladder infection and found out then that I had an enlarged liver. It really scared me, I knew then I needed to get a grip on my weight and thats when I decided to proceed with it .

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

My doctor recommended the gastric bypass because I have a lot of weight to lose. He thought this procedure is best for my weight .

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

My family is being very supportive of me having this surgery, of course they are very nervous ( afraid of the unknown ), but they are behind me.
