Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I am living proof that this surgery (Gastric RNY-Laproscopic) was the best thing I did for myself!! I was not concerned about my husband or my kids as much as I was concerned for myself (finally) if I didn't have this surgery. Although I didn't want my kids and my husband to lose me at an early age because I couldn't control my eating, I new that I HAD THE CONTROL and had to do something. I had my surgery almost 6 months ago to the day (Feb 27th, 2012) and I have lost 65 lbs so far and still losing monthly (slowing down now)! This was the best thing I ever did for myself, I consider it a life long gift to me and my family now!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Being overweight is depressing, it hurts both physically and mentally and I felt like such a failure!

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I have so much more energy, I still eat things I loved (except for the bad stuff) and make protein my first choice...since we don't have much of an appetite after surgery, you feel in control of your eating and your life, nothing like before surgery...I have self confidence, love to go clothing shopping (hated it before as I was a size 20 and felt miserable about going to the fat lady stores like Lane Bryant, and would say to myself "at least they have nice clothes for fat ladies!"-sad really). Once you admit that you are overweight and need help to lose it, surgery is a great option for those of you that have struggled with control and with understanding nutrition and what your body should not be eating...do yourself a life long favor and consider surgery!
