Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Since age 11 I have dealt with being oveeweight. Slowly getting bigger & bigger. I' ve tried Atkins Weight Watchers, Sugar Busters, Low Carb, you name it ive probably tried it. Ive exercised, taken diet pills, even Phentermine which helped me lose 68 pounds..only you can only take for so long. Ive gained almost all of my weight back. Ive had 2the children..2 c sections..which my weight probably had alot to do with. My last child my highest weight was 318. Its a daily struggle..and i dont seem to be going anywhere.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Clothes..appearence..rude ppl..there is no "worst thing"..theres many.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Pending..lol.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about it..when i was around 18. I went to a seminar in another town..they didnt accept my insurance. My Dr. Reffererd me to a surgeon who did..so here i am. My first impression was..too good to be true friends good things like this dont happen to me.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

Im still in the process myself. Most important so far..is getting the documents to them as soon as you can, complying with them so u have done all u can on your part.

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

I was nervous as heck! I could barely talk :)Im He is like a miracle worker- like a heroe really. Best advice would be to write all your questions & concerns down before your meeting, that way you dont forget anything..and bring a notebook w. U so u can write things on it when u need to.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

After attempting everything possible without keeping the weight off for a long period of time.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

Still im the process of deciding..my SURGEON recommended the ds..though i had rny in mind. From speaking w. Him & researching the ds..it seems to best choice.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I am a single mom, of 2 wonderful children..I am very scared nervous, mostly of dying. Who will care for my kids? I couldnt imagine me being w.o them &u vice versa. But again it breaks my heart when they want to run..play soccer &mommy cant..theres alot of things i want to do w. Them but am unable because of my weight. So I've done my research on the risks..complications..&u its a very hard decision..im still not so sure...but being at my weight and gaining..i cant guarentee withought haveing the surgery i will be around either?
