Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I Yo-yo'd all my life, I never had any trouble losing but never managed to maintain weight-loss. At this point in my life I am more concerned about my health than the way I look. But I will not mind being able to shop in regular clothing stores.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Trying to fit into seats in public places.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I just enjoy not being tired all the time and knowing that I can go anyplace I like and not have to worry about being able to fit into seats.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I have known about it for years. I never thought I would consider it. Over time it seemed silly not to consider it since the success rates are so much higher.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

The hospital stay was wonderful. I was in Kindred Hospital in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. The rooms were clean and bright and the staff was very kind.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

None at all.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was just happy that I was going to have the surgery. I was blissfully naive about surgical pain so I was not afraid at all.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I see my surgeon, nutrionist and pysch once a month. I also go to monthly support group meetings. I really enjoy the meetings the most because I love seeing how the friends I have made these last few months are doing.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

It is a little longer than I had expected but I don't care in the least. I would have more scars just like it to be guaranteed the results I have seen since I have had the surgery.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I really have not had any plateaus. I am losing slower than I was but since I have less to lose now I am not really concerned about it.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Definately. I notice men looking at me, stopping to talk to me and being more friendly in general. It really just amuses me.
