Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I always say I was born weighing 135lbs. It's a joke. I don't remember ever being thin, but I was never self-conscious about it either. I always embraced my Cuban voluptuous body and loved who I was. It wan't until I got married and had children that I considered my weight was a problem. My new husband is a wonderful cook and we have truly bonded over food. Gifts aren't roses and diamonds...they are twinkies and oreos. That's how my real struggle began.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight is the disdain with which people treat me. Whether it's a family member, a friend, or the hostess at a restaurant, people treat you like you're stupid because you're obese.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

My surgery was on September 23 2013. Just six short weeks ago, I was 44 lbs heavier. I am a different person today. I can feel myself more agile and I feel better. IT's not a simple process, but it's worth it..
