Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My emotional battle with my weight left me feeling helpless. I felt that as long as I carried this weight around I would never be happy. I thought that I needed to just accept the fact that I would be this way forever, or that I would die soon because of it.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I had to pretend to be this very happy person in front of everyone, while inside I hated everything about me. I couldn't find anyone to love me. All my friends were getting married and having babies, and I had non one and I was all alone.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

haven't had any of those experinces yet, I'm only three weeks post op.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about the surgery about five years ago. I thought it was just another cosmetic surgery.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was admitted to the hospital on Monday morning, and was released on Wed. afternoon. I don't remember much about my stay, I was in and out of sleep because of the morphine. I didn't have anything by mouth until the day I left. The thing that I think everyone should bring is their toothbrush. I had a bad taste in my mouth the whole time I was their.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Thankfully no complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I was very emotional weeks after my surgery. I had thoughts about whether or not I made the right decision, what if it didn't work. I attended the support group meetings to cope.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I attend the support group meetings once a month, I love them, they are very helpful.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I had the laproscopic procedure. I have 5 small incisions that you can barely see. My biggest scar is from th drain tube.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

none so far

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?
