Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

i was always big as a child ,but was active..i would go out and play and run around with the other kids with no problem...kids will be kids so you're gonna get that teasing(name calling)and you start to develop a thick skin..show on the outside it does'nt hurt but insideyou're crying...after awhile you learn to brush off the comments and try to ignore them ,but it was hard especially when the comments were from your friends.....most of the time they didn't mean it ,but it still hurt...thats when the food came in.....it was always there for me ,was my best friend ,made me feel better, didn't judge me!!!it's funny how a movie character summed it up-"fat bastard" in "austin powers" movie..."it's a strange thing,i eat because i'm sad ,but ,i'm sad because i eat...." no truer words were said ...a person who isnt owerweight wouldn't understand that ..it's just like a junkie needing that fix to escape, food was needed for my escape.... the funny thing is as i got older, and the bigger i got ,people would say"i never really see you eat"..which is probably true for a lot of people....you're too self consicious about eating in front of other people so you wouldn't...if i was at a party,i would make a BIG plate and take it home and eat it there in front of the tv....sometimes i'd wake up andyhink about what i was going to accomplish ,but rather,"what am i gonna eat today"...controling my weight was always hard because food is so readily accessible...i was in the food industry for over 30 years and it was always available.. i've done a few dietshere and there, but my biggest accomplishment was working out with my sister ,who's a personal trainer...i worked out hard with her for over a year and lost 75 lbs. but i got very sick(double pneumonia that damn near killed me!)and was down for quite a few months..soon old habits were picked up again and the weight came back on...at that point i just kinda gave up and accepted it..it wasn't till 2010 when i severely injured my self( i fell and blew out my knee, fractured my leg in 2 spots below my knee, had to have fusion surgery on my ankle, andpinched the nerves in my back) it took a long time to bounce back from that, and i still walk with a brace and cane support to this day..a few of my surgeons told me losing weight would help with my mobility and maybe lessen my discomfort(actually, they're not gonna give a fat guy a new knee 'cause he's just gonna wear it down and need another one... but they were being nice about it.)so i looked into bypass surgery ,talked with my doctor who said it would be the best thing for me... so thats my story...
