Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was on the typical weight gaining/losing roller coaster. Seemed I would gain and gain and maybe loose a pound here or there. Never enough to be healthy

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Knowing that I can get all kinds of deadly diseases because of my weitght and not being there for my kids.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Being able to fit into amusement park rides, walking down aisles like at the movies or stores. I have more energy when I'm w/my boys at the park or even outside playing w/them. I feel more energetic every morning and am not falling asleep all the time like I used to be.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first saw this on TV. Not sure what program or what I was doing at the moment. I was totally impressed and dreamed of me having it and how I'd look and feel.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My overall stay was great, to say the least. I was there From Dec 2 and released on Dec 5, 2002. It's important to bring faith and strength!!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I haven't had any complications, at least major ones. Just the typical not being able to hold down alot of things. It's like learning how to eat all over again.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I feel just great. I do get frustrated at times, that I don't know what to eat or order when I go somewhere. I'm starting to feel frustrated that I'm not loosing as much weight as the first month.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I don't have one, at least not at the moment.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scars (I had lap rny) are so minimal. I see them and don't believe I had wls w/those little scars. I'm glad they are small and I did expect them to be larger and ugly!!

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

Right now I'm experience the minimal of weight losing. I wish it could be the same as the first month. I lost 47lbs the first month. but a total of 65 in 3 months. It just gets frustrating since you know you are eating like a baby and the weight isn't shedding off as quickly.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

I notice alot of people treating me differently. I seem to get more "eye" attention from both men and women. I don't feel as shy when I walk in a store or restaurant. I mean technically I'm still overweight, but, 65 lbs has made alot of difference.
