Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was always thin in high-school and even the first few years of my 1st marriage. My ex-husband was never supportive with any diet that I done and always said all I needed was will power while eating a big dinner in front of me. If I did diet pills he wanted me to stop because he said I was grumpy all of the time. With my second child I was on 6 months bed rest and so I gained more weight. There came a time in that marriage where he stop pretending and told me I was fat. I would be afraid to eat in front of him due to criticism, so I ate in my car when I was alone. Not all of this is his fault because I did pick up the fork and could not put it down. But I am an emotional eater and due to pregnancy problems , marriage problems and my Dad dying I gained weight to cope with the mental pain.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not being to play or do things with my kids. My son is 11yrs and my daughter is 14yrs. My son is very active and likes basketball, hiking and camping. It is hard to do this with him because my knees hurt and I am always winded. My daughter favorite thing to do , of course, is shop. I dread doing this. I actually will buy an outfit and pray it fits because I will not try it on in the store and I hate to return it only to say "IT DON'T FIT"

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I am in the process of getting this done, I have a BMI of 37 at 211 lbs, My insurance requires 35 bmi with co-morbidities, NO PROBLEM, I have a list for them. I started seeing a Dr on 2/26/13 and have to be seen 6 or 7 times in 6 months. I visited the seminar and Surgeon, Everyone says I qualify. Hoping the rug will not be pulled out from under me. Planning on surgery in August or September.
