Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was diagnosed Type 1 diabetic June 12 2002. I had lost 10 kg in a month's time (I never minded that weight loss) and was constantly hungry and tired. I started shooting up insulin 4 times a day and in no time, I started to gain weight. Over the years, my weight kept going up and I tried every diet I could lay my hands on. I restricted my food and started to eat low carb. I needed too much insulin and that extra insulin made me gain even more weight. No doctor could help me get rid of the overweight and it was making me really sad and depressed. I felt like a loser. My doctor prescribed different tablets to loose weight, but they made me more depressed and fat.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Shame. Not feeling well. Not loving yourself anymore and no more selfworth.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Being able to buy the clothes I want to wear, not the bags they make for overweight people. Being able to eat healthy without fearing overweight. Wearing nice shoes because now my feet are slimmer as well. Having better control over my diabetes. Having less life threatening conditions.
