Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I look back at pictures of myself as a child and teenager. I do not see a fat girl but was always "bigger" than other girls my age but I was still active. I rode horses competitively, played sports, and was very athletic. I was never happy with the number on the scale and it didn't help that there was always some fool around to make fun of my size. By the time I was a senior in high school I had tried so many diets with little to no success. I finally decided I had to be ok with me. I have thought about WLS for years but am finally on my journey as of last month. From the time I hit 40 (I am 42 now), I have been going down hill medically with diagnoses of diabetes, high blood pressure, and recently adding arthritis and high cholesterol. I refuse to get tested for it, but I am sure there is sleep apnea in there as well. So my journey begins because I have always done for everyone else and now I am going to be selfish and do for me. I want to live and this is no way to be doing it, in constant pain and on medications. I am ready... I have taken the step. And I am soooo excited!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

the worst part of being overweight is the pain and illnesses I have been stricken with. I am excited about being thinner but more so about being healthy again.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I cant wait to be able to buy clothes in regular stores and to be more mobile for my kids.

ARE YOU READY TO PAY IT FORWARD & SHARE YOUR JOURNEY? Your journey will help highlight the many ways weight loss surgery improves lives and makes a difference in our families, communities and world. EACH JOURNEY COUNTS as a voice towards greater awareness.
