JPS Health Network to consider covering weight-loss surgery

Poor patients would be able to have surgery to limit the amount of food they can consume, under a proposal to the board of the JPS Health Network.

Bariatric surgery, such as Lap-Band and other brands, would not be immediately available. Instead, JPS plans to phase the surgery in after selected patients enrolled in the network’s low-cost health plan, Connection, go through counseling on diet and nutrition. But by offering the operation, JPS hopes to reduce the cost of treating diabetes, heart and liver issues associated with obesity.

Charles Ridley is one third the man he used to be. He's lost 500 pounds and, as a result, has gained his life back, he says.

For as long as he can remember, he was always overweight. Diet after diet, his weight was like a yo-yo. When he was a kid he was picked on so badly he left the public school system at age 13. He never finished high school.

Surgery gives couple their lives back

Dr. Carl Pesta's patients often change their birthdates to reflect the day he helped transform their lives through surgery.

"My work is extremely gratifying," said Pesta, a bariatric surgeon with Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Warren Campus, where he's performed hundreds of procedures in the last five years. "Many patients have been stuck in their homes for years. It's amazing to be a part of the joy they experience in going to a baseball game, if they want to.
