Obstructive sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes

I saw a 62-year-old gentleman for type 2 diabetes. He was on metformin and sitagliptin in addition to four antihypertensive medications. His HbA1c was 8.2% and blood pressure 148 mm Hg/83 mm Hg. He was sent to see me because he had driven his car into a ditch. Concerns were raised that it might be due to hypoglycemia.

“It may sound illogical. But you should actually eat to lose weight instead of starving yourself by extreme dieting,? says Liz Freitick, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics nutritionist.

According to Freitick, severe caloric restriction can signal your body into “starvation mode,? when the body works extra hard to protect itself by hanging on to every last pound.

Exposure to insecticide may play role in obesity epidemic among some women

Prenatal exposure to an insecticide commonly used up until the 1970s may play a role in the obesity epidemic in women, according to a new study involving several Michigan State University researchers.

 

More than 250 mothers who live along and eat fish from Lake Michigan were studied for their exposure to DDE – a breakdown of DDT. The study, published as an editor’s choice in this month’s edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, analyzed DDE levels of the women’s offspring.

Losing weight ... and finding hope

A Fond du Lac woman, who once weighed 350 pounds, said the "weight just came" (on) with inactivity after a couple of surgeries and college courses behind a computer.

But Amie Smith, 293 Third St., put her mind to achieving a better life.

She dropped half of her former weight, quit alcohol and tobacco, survived three cancer scares and seven major surgeries during the past nine years.

"My best advice is, the only way to create positive habits is by repeating them over and over until they are habit," Smith said.

Smith, who turns 45 next month, admits to having an "addictive" personality.

Bariatric Surgery and Exercise

You more than likely know someone who has had a Bariatric Surgery. These are surgeries that help with obesity such as Gastric Bypass and Lap Band.

If you do know someone then you more than likely found that person to gain weight back. I have known several people and some have been my clients. I have mixed feelings about these surgeries mainly because they are a quick fix for a disease that is all about lifestyle and if you just changed your lifestyle, i.e. diet and exercise, then there would be no need for the surgery.
