on February 4, 2009

Editor's note: The pseudonym "Mary" has been used to protect the interviewee's privacy.

At the beginning of each year, many people resolve to lose weight and get healthy. For severely obese people, this may be easier said than done.

Some of those people are turning to surgery so they can finally keep their resolutions.

"Bariatric surgery is an option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means, or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems," according to the Weight-control Information Network.

Being fat makes me late for work.
on February 4, 2009
I used to weigh over 240 lbs. I had gastric bypass surgery almost 3 years ago and lost over 70 lbs in a years' time. I hit my plateau of 170 around December of 2007 and then around May of 2008, the weight started creeping back up on my middle section, right where it had been before my surgery. I feel miserable because I've gone back to my old habits.

I hate being fat and so I've started going back to the gym with several of my girlfriends. Misery loves company! Actually, with the tv screen on each machine, an hour on the treadmill goes by relatively quick. I just get funny looks from other patrons when I laugh out loud. I'm that person in the movie theater that laughs out loud at something no one else laughs at.

Board-Certified Bariatric Surgeon, Trace Curry, MD Completes the First Single-incision Gastric Band
on February 4, 2009
Dr. Trace Curry has completed the first single-incision gastric band weight-loss surgery in Cincinnati.

Rather than the traditional five incisions used for laparoscopic gastric banding, surgeons used a single incision, reducing scarring, accelerating healing, and causing less pain.

"The goal of the new technique is to make laparoscopic surgery better by decreasing the number of incisions," said Dr. Curry. "Fewer scars are better cosmetically and potentially better for pain control. The pain may be less because you alleviate additional cuts, and therefore the recovery may be faster."
