'I'm still me, but I look different': Belleville mom sheds 140 pounds

Charlotte Wagner was tired of getting winded while walking a few steps.

She hated the stares from patrons around her when she couldn't fit in an auditorium seat at Belleville East High School.

"I had to bring my own chair or I couldn't go," said Charlotte, 48, who has lost 140 pounds since having gastric bypass surgery in August 2007 at St. Alexius Hospital in St. Louis.

Metabolic monitoring in patients prescribed antipsychotics abysmal

Among insured patients newly prescribed second-generation antipsychotics, monitoring of blood glucose and lipid levels falls far short of 2004 American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines, researchers report [1].

The guidelines are based on substantial evidence that these drugs can increase risk for cardiovascular disease by affecting lipid and glucose metabolism and body weight.

The EndoBarrier, developed by GI Dynamics of Lexington, Massachusetts, is an impermeable sleeve that lines the first 60 centimetres of the small intestine. In animal experiments and preliminary human trials, it reduces weight and rapidly brings type II diabetes under control.
