  Born in Cuba, Dr. Fernandez received   his undergraduate degree from   University of Miami, received   his medical doctorate degree in   Dominican Republic and did his   general surgery specialty at Alton   Oschner Medical Clinic in New Orleans,   Louisiana. He is board certified by the   American Board of Surgery.   Dr. Fernandez, a pioneer in laparoscopy in the early 1990s,   is an advanced general and bariatric surgeon. He has been   in practice for over 25 years serving as medical director for   bariatric surgery at 3 Tampa hospitals. He is a proctor for   2 nationally recognized surgical instrument companies.   Like laparoscopy, he teaches weight loss surgeons across   the country.
