First impression - very knowledgeable but a bit soft spoken. I don't have a one-on-one consult with him until 8/15. However, I have talked to others who have already had the surgery and they indicate that both his surgical competence and bedside manner are FANTASTIC!
His nurse, Kim, is AWESOME! The administrative staff were okay.
Was very impressed with what he said about length of the surgery and how he takes no short cuts. Also is very pro pain-med -- whatever it takes to feel comfortable. He seemed to be VERY concerned with aftercare and follow-up.
Dr. Maguire is a soft-spoken gentle man. At first I thought, "How in the world am I going to be able to converse with someone so seemigly shy and quiet?" I soon found out that I had nothing to fear and we got along famously.
Of course, he emphasizes after care. Any doctor that does not: watch out. Dr. Maguire's patients meet on a monthly basis at Kettering Hospital, second Tuesday of every month unless otherwise noted. Anyone can come to the support group, so if you are just looking into this surgery, call the office to double-check the day of the group.
Dr. Maguire is a general surgeon, but he specializes in weight loss surgery, mainly the RNY and the BPD. He has done thousands of these surgeries, and because of that fact, I felt comfortable allowing him to perform it on me!
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both?
Well, of course you want surgical competence because you don't wanna wake up with instruments still stuck inside you (haha) but you must be able to TALK to your doctor and voice your concerns. If he/she is in a hurry and doesn't seem to care, I'd make an exit for the door.
I really have nothing negative to say except that I had to do everything myself. I had to obtain the records for review, I had to schedule all of my tests, I had to call the insurance company and follow up myself.. things that I feel his office should be doing FOR me. However, in doing so, I knew exactly what was going on so I think maybe I prefer it that way. At least I knew that my report wasn't simply laying on a desk somewhere! :)
I appreciated his soft spoken, thorough presentation of what the surgery entailed and what risks I would face. He was very organized.
I enjoy making him laugh. He can be very serious. His office staff is professional and helpful, though his nurse misstepped once, the office followed through immediately and solved my problem.
I liked the speed he takes out tubes and the fact that he cared whether or not I was in pain.
I went to see him once a week after surgery. Ended up in same day patient care twice, once for dehydration and once for a gastric tube that was out of place. Then I see him once a month now that I do not have any tubes and can take my meds and eat. He has a structured support program that meets once a month. He addressed the risks of the surgery by fixing them. He is a great cutter
in my book. He is also a very caring person.
Dr. Maguire is a very caring man with an excellent staff. He is a man of few words but never hesitates to explain thoroughly if you have a question...the best thing about him is his fatherly concern for his patients and his lectures about things that may or may not happen socially after a large amount of weight is lost. Preceding surgery was a very informative seminar and I felt he was very open and honest about the risks and benefits this seminar contained pictures and diagrams and a support person was invited to attend with the person considering surgery which was wonderful because then I didn't have to explain anything to my support person because she was there and she already knew. I think surgical competence and bedside manner are both very necessary as most peoples' weight issues are a very personal matter and they need to feel comfortable with their surgeon I would strongly recommend Dr. Maguire to anyone.
When I first met Dr. Maguire I didn't like him at all! As I began loosing weight he became my strongest support person. He has seen me through two plateaus that I became so depressed. He tells me not to be down on myself as I'll loose it, no matter what. His office staff are always there for us. His nurses are always at our monthly support groups & most have had the operation themselves. My aftercare for the first year is monthly visits with blood work because of vitamin deficiencies & other health problems. I NEVER hesitate to call them if I'm having a problem. How would I rate him, well he has given me my life back and money can't repay him for all that he has done for my life. He doesn't have much of a bedside manner, but makes sure you are comfortable post-op & is there when you need him.
Dr Maguire offered a free 3 hour presentation about the surgery he does, and described his qualifications in detail. I really liked getting to meet him, his staff, and past patients who had the surgery. The patients were very open...even let us see their scars! (which were minimal) The risks, etc were explained in great detail. Dr Maguire's office worked very closely with me to get insurance approval.
Dr Maguire also invites prospective students to attend his monthly support group. This gave me another opportunity to meet and talk to people who had surgery. Some had surgery years ago, some only 3-4 weeks ago.
