    Dr. “Marty” Harnisch graduated from the University of Notre Dame (GO IRISH!) with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, continuing on to medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  He entered active duty service in the U.S. Army, commissioned in 1995, and completed his surgical residency training in San Antonio at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2002.  He then went on to complete his fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center in 2007, where he specialized in minimally invasive surgery (to include bariatric surgery), which led to his passion for bariatric surgery. During his surgical career Dr. Harnisch has performed thousands of various surgeries including: elective & emergent operations, bariatric surgeries, and acute trauma surgeries. Dr. Harnisch has had 6 combat deployments, 5 of which were in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During this time he honorably cared for injured soldiers serving in defense of our country. After more than 20 years in the service, he has retired from the Army as a proud Veteran. Dr. Harnisch has dedicated his career to weight loss and metabolic surgery because he truly loves what he does. Dr. Harnisch is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
