    Dr. Robert Michaelson, Bariatric Surgeon

    Robert Michaelson, MD, Ph.D., FACS, FASMBS is a nationally recognized, double board-certified general surgeon specializing in advanced minimally invasive bariatric surgery at Northwest Weight & Wellness Center in Everett, Washington, where he serves as the Medical Director. He is one of the two physicians in the Pacific Northwest who is Board-Certified by The American Board of Obesity Medicine.

    Graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha Honors, Dr. Michaelson earned an MS in Physiology, a Ph.D. in Neuroendocrinology, and his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois. He completed his general surgery residency and internship at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center. He went on to fellowship train in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Texas Endosurgery Institute. Additionally, Dr. Michaelson honorably served our country before retiring from the Medical Corps of the United States Navy after 23 years of service.

    Board-Certified by both the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), Dr. Michaelson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Medical Association (AMA), Seattle Surgical Society, and the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOM) Honor Medical Society. He previously served as president of the Washington State Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

    He has dedicated his career to teaching fellow surgeons in bariatric surgical techniques and advanced laparoscopic procedures and research. He was honored to have been the only bariatric surgeon asked to speak in front of the FDA Advisory Panel in Washington, D.C, which resulted in him playing a pivotal role in extending the indications for the gastric banding to 27 million additional Americans. Dr. Michaelson is the recipient of numerous awards, including Center of Excellence Surgeon, Seattle’s “Top Docs” four times and was named “Best of Western Washington’s” Best Doctor in 2008, Outstanding Teaching Award UCSD Medical Center, Raymond Allen Golden Apple Instructorship Award, George C. Smith Summer Research Award, the Golden Flame Award for Outstanding Teaching and more.
