Eric Volckmann Bariatric Surgeon M.D.


Dr. Eric Volckmann is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and an Assistant Professor within the Section of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah. Dr. Volckmann attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology degree with Honors and Distinction. While at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Volckmann was also a member of the nationally-ranked, two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Men’s Lacrosse team. Dr. Volckmann then remained in Chapel Hill and went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Upon finishing medical school, Dr. Volckmann moved to Chicago where he did his residency in General Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and spent two years in the lab of Dr. Nathaniel Soper working as a research fellow in gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery. After residency, Dr. Volckmann completed a Clinical Assistant Professorship at The Ohio State University Medical Center, one of the oldest training programs in the country focused on minimally invasive surgery. During this fellowship, Dr. Volckmann gained extensive training in minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric procedures including laparoscopic gastric bypass and gastric banding, upper endoscopy, and laparoscopic operations for gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, and hiatal and abdominal wall hernias, as well as laparoscopic surgery for diseases of the spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands. Dr. Volckmann’s research and clinical interests include the surgical and endoscopic management of obesity and diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
