The pre-op nurses and the nurses who took care of me right after surgery and the next day were wonderful. Very attentive and helpful. But it seemed that once I wasn't a brand new post-op patient, the nurses didn't pay as much attention to me. I would ask for ice and I would have to ask a couple more times before I ever got it--and trust me, you need ice! I wasn't allowed to get it myself; the pantry was off limits to everyone but the staff. I went three hours one day without ice. The only time anyone checked on me was when it was time to take vitals or change my IV bag. The hat in the toilet to measure my urine was always full, so I had to empty it myself and keep track of the amount! I never asked for pain meds, but when I got out of bed the first time, I got extremely nauseated and the nurse offered me something for it. The only time I was in real pain was when I had these horrible gas pains (it took my bowels awhile to get the hang of things again) and it hurt so much. I was crying and I had to ring twice before anyone showed up to see what I needed. I was told I needed to walk to make the gas move around, so me and my IV pole walked around the floor while I cried my eyes out. I would have jumped off the roof if they had said it would have helped! But after doing laps for about 15 minutes, without feeling any better; in fact, feeling quite humiliated as I walked and cried with people looking at me and not paying me any mind, the nurse finally asked me would I like a suppository and I said yes. Anything to make this pain go away! Okay, fine, I go back to my room and waited 20 minutes for her to come back. By the time she got there I was almost hysterical and angry besides--because I knew she was at the desk doing her charts while I was writhing in pain. So, I would have to say they weren't too responsive to my pain. I should say, however, that I did not have the same nurses twice so, it's a crap shoot as to who you end up with I suppose.

On the positive side! The staff was friendly to me and my family. I was brought a newspaper each morning and I was able to keep my room nice and frosty the way I like it! Overall, it wasn't too bad, but I would like to be able to have a better opinion of the hospital I stay in. And while the nursing care needs improvement, my doctor and his team were excellent and my procedure went well.

Careplex is new and beautiful. All rooms are are private, something I did not know prior to admission. I found the staff of nurses to be excellent, caring and quick to respond. My room was directly accross from the nursing station and when my door was closed my room was very quiet. The only thing I had to ask twice for was a refill of ice chips. My stay was very comfortable and I would recommend Sentara Careplex to anyone.

HAVE SOME ONE STAY WITH YOU 24/7. I WOULD HAVE DISCHARGED MYSELF EARLY IF I THOUGHT MY DOCTOR WOULD HAVE ALLOWED IT. I WAS SCARED, TREATED POORLY, AND FRIGHTENED FOR MY CARE.

Aside from the usual things of being everything a hospital should be, they have special beds for us, that are like sleeping on air. That alone is wonderful.

Sentara Careplex in Hampton, VA is a new hospital and is state of the art. The only complaint I have is of one night with the nursing staff. I had asked several times for pain medicine. When I got up to take a walk and ask again I found the nurses playing video games on the computer. Other than that, everyone was great

The staff was good, I only had a problem with one day nurse who always seemed to forget that I needed to be hooked back up to the wall after walks or bathroom breaks. The night staff was good and the care partners were there when you needed them . I rate the staff as 4 1/2 Stars out of 5.
