Help. please.

My family doctor won't even consider me for the surgery because I am only 100 pounds overweight.  She talked over me when I tried to explain that I was considering my comorbidities as a factor.
She want's me to exercise more.  That is all that it will take.  I now have a handout about being more active.

It wasn't the worst thing that a doctor has said to me about weight loss, but it was dismissive.

She assured me that she would look at any material I brought in, but all I have is on the surgery itself and nothing about eligibilty for the surgery from a medical point of view.

Can someone tell me where would I get that information?

I've seen the name of the contact person for Dr. Ellesmere, but I don't know how to contact her.

the above link is to the bariatric centre in Halifax. it has a link to the referral form that is needed and all the qualifications that are required to be approved for the surgery.

For example BMI greater than 40 etc....

Hope this helps and if your Doctor is not helpful try and find another. Never stop the good fight.

Thank you.  I will print that up and get it to her.

Unfortunately the situation here in Cape Breton is that no doctors are taking new patients. When my last dr left, we were handed over to this one.  We are stuck with who we have.  No matter what.   :P

Thank you!

A Nurse Practitioner can also make the referral.

You have the right to insist for the referral.

Thank you.  I will provide her with the information and see if she changes her mind.

I have found some links between fibromyalgia and obesity, as well as some documentation about the connection between both and depression.  She will get that information as well.

If she won't do it, then I will insist.

I have a medical tribunal for disability in her hands at the moment.  ******g her off more will not be to my advantage.

I am still furious that she wouldn't even listen.

When she mentioned swimming I told her the pools are too far away and they do cost money, not to mention that the swim times don't synch with my child care times.

She told me I could do the exercises in my own bathtub!  *scream*
I haven't had room in my tub for much more than me since I was a child.  :P

wow... maybe my venting isn't over yet.

Thank you all for the information.  At least I have other resources to seek out.

You mentioned you have comorbidities = if you see a specialist for any of them maybe you could get a referral from the specialist  :)

I have put together a package with the information about who is eligible, why I want the surgery, listing my high blood pressure, sleep apnea, chronic fatigue as well as the fibromyalgia and depression.

I also state that I would prefer someone who is a bariatric specialist to make the decision whether I am eligible or not.

Since she has never even weighted me I think I have the right to ask that.  lol

I will keep the specialist in mind if she doesn't agree after that.
Thanks for that idea.
