OHIP To Allow WLS in the USA Again??????
Ohip is under a huge strain. Home care has cut back drastically- perhaps 40% -so don't expect out of country bariatric surgery to return as it was before. People are being denied basic care- instead of nurses providing daily visits for home IV- we can only visit every three days- extra visits only if there is a problem.

I have the same surgeon as Erica and he said the same to me last September and asked that I write a letter to my MP regarding the Barix Clinic and the great care etc.
I have to say that with all the complications that I had and how sick I was at the time, I truly believe that they saved my life. In fact I know they did. And I can go back there free for life as well.
To be honest I can't see OHIP opening things up in the US again. They are expanding services and opening new centres here but it takes time to get things up an running. The cost associated with surgery in the US are cost prohibitive and can't be sustained when Ontario is in the crapper budget wise.

I think that the people who have had OOC surgery and have supportive family doctors have been very lucky. I've read stories about people who've had OOC surgery, had issues, gone to the local ER and the doctors had no clue what to do and the family doctors had no idea either.
I don't know about if home care funding is an adequate indicator of our health care system. I think CCAC has proven that increased funding to home care decreases hospital ALC rates (alternate level of care ie people who are waiting for home care or waiting to go to a nursing home or another facility), it is a no brainer but when on earth did common sense ever apply to our government? It'll take some time for that info to filter upwards and then the money come down through the LHIN to CCAC and then to the service providers. Our CCAC was in millions of $$ of debt last year, got a 1 time funding bail out and now back to square one with the new fiscal year. Should be interesting to see what happens provincially with the election coming up in October and then what happens afterwards. In talking to people who've been around awhile the government likes to do the difficult and dirty stuff early in their new term so they can have the following 2 or 3 years to recover. So I think we can see a lot of changes in our health care system this time next year.
