Post Surgical Stay in Toronto

Hi Everyone - I have been lurking, but not adding anything for a long time.  I have one more appt next week before the surgeons appt.  What I am concerned about from my last meeting is that they strongly recommend that I stay in the Toronto area for a few days after my 1 - 2 days post surgical.  I am willing to do whatever it takes to give myself the best opportunities to heal, but looking at the accomodations, locations and cost leaves me feeling a bit, I don't know, sketchy?  Uncomfortable maybe?  Does anyone know of other options?  Best options?

Thanks for any input.  I live in North Bay (about 5 hours north of Toronto, and 700 nasty bumps).

The three hotels across from Humber will give you a discounted (hospital patient) rate.  I got an even cheaper rate at the Novotel a bit North of that location near the Vaughan Mills mall.

If you ask at your appointments, they will give you a package with some local options.  There is one place close to the hospital that will let you stay for 7 days for around $400.

I got my hotel in Montreal for 1/3 the regular cost through travelocity secret hotels. You can see the area the hotel is in and the accommodations there before 'bidding'.

You'd be surprised by the deductions the hotel will offer you if you call them directly and ask for a medical rate - my sister has done this several times when she had to travel out of province with her daughter to see specialists (they live in PEI and often have to go to Halifax for specialists). Also, many people qualify for a lower rate due to their place of work or belonging to a professional organization (Armed Forces, Law Society, Government Employees, etc), so you can ask about that as well. You can also usually get a reduced rate by paying at the time of booking, but you're unable to get a refund if you have to cancel with that arrangement so it's riskier, but you can save a significant amount if you're sure your dates are set. I always inquire and never pay full rate when I travel.

The PATT nurse gave me a paper which had the retirement home on it, they closed off a wing for bariatric patients and charge you less than the hotles, and they also feed you the right amount of portions on the stuff you need, ask them when you got your appointment....

Travel Lodge gave a rate of 73.00 per night, it is right across from HUMBER...if that is where you are going to have your surgery.
Keep your receipts apparently you can deduct this on your income tax.
