I was watching a video of an actual rny surgery on utube and it mentioned that a drain is left in.  Does this happen in Ottawa?  Do we come out of surgery with a drain?  If so when  does it get removed?

I went through Ottawa and to date have not heard of anyone from Ottawa having drains post op. Not sure about the other hospitals though.

I had a drain for 3 days post op (TWH) and there was a chance they might have sent me home with it., but this wasn't necessary  I understand that the drains get the excess fluid out of the surgical area to help prevent infection.

Drains are used in most "open" prodedures as there is a great deal of bleeding.  Drains are seldom used in Laprascopic (minimally invasive, key hole) procedures as they are considered "bloodless procedures"  That being said sometimes, when there are conplications a drain may be used.  It is removed when there is less than 15 ml (tablespoon) drainage over 24 hours.

I think it depends on the surgeon. Dr.Smith at st.Joes Toronto seems to use them. Mine came out the day I went home. I also felt so much better once it was gone.

I had no drain, but hubby did.  We had surgery the same day, at HRRH, so I'd tend to think that it would depend on the cir****tances.

I think generally, no drains in lap RNY. However, I went through HRRH and had drains. My doctor said that when a surgery doesn't go a hundred percent textbook, even if it went fine, that he puts drains in as a precaution. While they were uncomfortable, I felt better having them after seeing all the stuff that would have been trapped in my stomach. They came out after a week.
