Remember I had an ear that would plug from time to time?

I decided to post because a few out there also replied that you had the same happen to you.

Since the surgery, my left ear keeps plugging on and off.  Made an appt and it ends up that there's a large amount of blood behind the eardrum.  My NP said, are you sure you didn't fall or banged your head, we mainly see this with head trauma and I said "Well, maybe they dropped me from the operating table"  lmao

She said eventually the body will absorb it and since I have no side effects from the blood being there that she will simply keep and eye on it every 2 weeks and go for there.

It doesn't seem to be getting better so I don't know what they can do if its not absorb but we'll see.

I remember someone saying that they were 2 years out and was still happening, maybe its the same thing for you, you should get it checked.

IT'S FRIDAY!

That's really interesting Nathalie.  My left ear has been plugging a couple of times per day for about 6 months now.  No clue why.  I don't recall bonking my head, but that doesn't mean I didn't. LOL   Next time I'm at the doc, I'll ask her about it.  And if you could keep me posted on that, I'd appreciate it!

Sure will, next Thursday I go back and she's going to take a pic of it to put in my file...lol...I hope it went down a bit, it's getting on my nerves, its like I'm under water all the time...I noticed it's mostly in the morning, by the time I get to dinner, it's not doing it anymore, wonder if it has anything to do with how I sleep....weird!

If I lay on my left side, mine definitely plugs up.  I absolutely *hate* it.  It has certainly given me a new appreciation for individuals with hearing loss.

funny you should mention this.... I too have "episodes" of blocked ears never before.  Infact right now both ears.   Since we're sharing since post op every couple of hours without warning I gulp air.  Almost like a gasp.  Not as frequent but definately concern in the beginning.  I honestly thought it was a reaction to being in surgery so long. weird or what.....

Great we'll be the next medical test subjects..

Will take a kayaking trip summer 2012, freedom

Do you mean an actual gasp or more like a deep sigh?

I had that "sudden big involuntary gulp of air coming out of nowhere" happen to me too for a while.  Very weird, but it seems to have slowed down now.  Probably started about 6 weeks post-op, and started to happen less frequently at about 8 months.  I had the ear blocks up in the morning trouble too and I am being referred to a Earn Nose & Throat specialist because apparently my hearing is actually deteriroating in 1 ear too.  No idea if it is wls related.

Claire, that sounds like a deep, silent hiccup to me.

What you're experiencing is called barotrauma and it frequently results from flying, especially if you have a cold or allergies at the time you flew - I'm surprised the nurse didn't mention this. Blood behind the ear rarely results from head trauma, it's a common outcome caused by extreme changes in pressure in the middle ear. It's also common for divers. If can be so severe that it causes hearing loss and a surgical draining of the ear drum is required, though it usually clears up on its own. So if you've flown (or been diving) recently, you have your likely answer.

She did mention it and I have never flown in my life!
