Sugar Alcohols?
Can anyone tell me their experience with sugar alcohols. If you tolerate them well before surgery will you after? Can anyone also tell me about the SF syrups at Starbucks? Are they irritating to the stomach? Can they be added to Opti ....I am from the Guelph clinic? Someone has also mentioned here that adding cocoa to opti tastes better but is that allowed through the Guelph clinic? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Sue
I wanted to comment on the sugar alcohols. I am 7 weeks post op.. I limit my sugar alcohols , if i have too much i become bloated and VERY gassy. Stomach starts rolling and get diarrhea as well. I make sure i read ALL my labels on my food to make sure the content. But some may tolerate them better than others. I have just purchased some sugar free Davinci syrups and no problems with them so far...Good luck Sue...Krista..
Hello,
I went through Ottawa, so, am not sure what Guelph's rules are.
However, I used baker's cocoa, like Fry's cocoa, in my vanilla opti and it tasted good. I can't remember for sure, but I believe there was no sugar in it, so I figured it was okay to use. I also used extracts, from the baking aisle, in the vanilla opti too (banana, orange, lemon). I didn't mind the chocolate opti, so, did nothing with it. Apparently, you can add instant coffee to it if you want.
I never like the sugar free syrups myself, so, do not use them.
As for sugar alcohols, they make me feel very sick post-op. I used them sparingly before surgery because too much would leave me stranded in the bathroom!! I try to avoid fake sugar as much as possible because I really don't like the taste of it, in anything. If I want a treat, I just have a very small portion of a regular treat. For example, one bite of ice cream or cake, etc. And, I don't have those very often.
I hope this info helps!

I was through HRRH and cocoa was permitted there and yes it's sugar free. I only used one spoon to my opti, loved it I really hated sf syrups, but, that's just me. I stay clear of sugar alcohols, they are not recommended at our centre, or at least in limited amounts.
