Hi,

Tomorrow I will be one week post op.  My question is approximately how long does it take for the abdominal swelling to go down?

thanks, Charlene

I am a week post op too (well, 8 days lol) I actually gained 10 pounds with all the air and fluid they pumped into me!!! I was 235 the morning of surgery and 245 when I got home. Unbelievable!!

My tummy is still very swollen and sore. It feels so strange to have a gastric bypass and come out fatter!

Usually about two weeks out you'll really start feeling better and the bloat will be reduced or gone. For me it was as soon as they took the drain out within two days of ghost I felt much better. Good luck on the road ahead!

Congrats on your surgery. I don't know the answer to this question, but I do know I am 2 weeks postop and I'm still having a great deal of abdominal swelling. It has definitely decreased, but still there.

I had a lot of fluids in the hospital - they were running constantly and the rate was never below 100, in fact, right before I discharged it was at 200 - and when I came home my feet and lower legs were so swollen that when you pushed on the top of my foot, I had pitting edema for a good three minutes or more; it was very uncomfortable and remained that way until about 10 days out. It is exciting to see my ankles, tendons, and bones in my feet - they haven't been this small in years!

One more thing, I'm not weighing at home so I have no idea how much fluid weight I gained in the hospital, my guess is 20+ pounds, but I had to go to my PCP last week at 9 days out and I weighed two pounds MORE than I did the morning of surgery.  I know it is getting better because I can see and feel myself getting smaller. Try to be patient and drink a lot of water, it'll come off eventually.

Best wishes!

Thank you all for your very helpful answers.  How do you get the weight scale app to show starting weight and weight loss to date?

hopefully this bloating, swelling will start subsiding next week.  I must learn patience.  I weigh 3 pounds. More today than I did post op....lol
