I just recently had my 6 month follow up and in the process had my labs reviewed. I was told to start taking VIT D as i was very low. 23 i believe was the number they had and the doc just called me with the pending VIT A and was told that was very low and i needed to start taking a supplement. The VIT D, was recommended by my PCP to take 1000 IU daily but, the bariatric clinic told me to two. VIT A, I was told by the PCP to take 5000 IU daily but, i can't seem to find any in that dosage. I will get back to my PCP to see if i can take 10 000 IU  as those are the only ones i could find. Do they actually sell the 5000 any where, if so, pls provide the store. Thanks

23 is super low for D, it should be at least 80 (says the Linus Pauling Institute).  Most post ops need AT LEAST 10,000 IU a day to keep their level good.  1000 or 2000 IU isn't going to do much for you.  I would order the 50,000 IU D3 from vitalady and take that every day for a month or two, then get checked again.  I have to take 50,000 IU three times a week to keep my level good.

As far as vitamin A, you can take 10,000 IU every other day instead of 5000 IU daily.  But if yours is very low, that may  not be enough.  I take 25,000 IU A three times a week to keep my level up.

Thanks Kelly. I know my numbers are shocking right. My Doc said he'll check the levels again in 3 months and see where they are. I think the only way to get that high amount of vitamins is to order them as i've never seen those Units in Canada.

Oh, in the US the only way to get 50,000 IU D3 is to order it and probably the same with 25,000 IU A, too.

It seems like many docs, even bariatric surgeons, don't realize how much it takes to bring those numbers up.  But 1000 or 2000 IU D3 is next to nothing.

Kelly, she's getting her levels checked in 3 months. I got toxic level of Vit D (205) taking 50,000 IU daily for 4-5 weeks. (My first level was 22) Shouldn't she start with a lower daily amount ?  Donna

Well, personally, I'd check it sooner than three months.  but if she does not plan to get it checked for three months, then maybe I'd take 50,000 IU D3 five times a week instead of daily.

I don't know where your D level started at.  It would be unusual, though not impossible, for a RNY patient to go from 23 to toxic in three months of taking 50,000 IU a day but it's possible.  According to the Vitamin D Council, toxicity is unlike to occur (but that does not mean impossible) in a non-RNY person (meaning they absorb it a lot better than we do) unless they take at least 40,000 IU D3 a day for at least three months.

Please do NOT take 50k iu vitamin D in the levels and for the duration posted here - you are extremely likely to be toxic in 3 months ....

Many of us take larger doses than your doctor is recommending, I personally take 1 x 50k iu dry vitamin D (per week) to maintain a level of 80 - if I were to take what was being advised here, I have NO DOUBT I would be toxic in weeks rather than months.

Beware of unqualified advice.
