Is it bad to go below your goal weight?
I guess that depends on how low your goal weight is. I'd say it's not healthy (which is not that same as "bad") to go below a normal BMI. I don't think it would be unhealthy for most people to go three pounds under their goal weight, though, unless their goal weight was at the very bottom of the "normal" BMI range. What's your BMI today? What does your doctor say?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I guess you and your surgeon can decide what is healthy for you, but because of the dreaded bounce back of a few lbs, my choice was to go as low as I can during this early stage.
How tall are you? Unless you are well over 6 feet tall your weight sounds fine. People are not used to seeing you thinner. Plus our faces tend to look gaunt when we lose but they tend to look better by the 2-3 year mark

You have been given excellent advice. It is not BAD to go below the goal weight, it is SMART. I am 5'2" and my surgeon's goal is 136. That is BMI of 24.9, the absolute highest to stay in normal weight BMI.
When I reached 128 he suggested that I go down to 116 or even 106 if I could get there. That would still be a healthy BMI and give a cushion for bounce back.
My surgeon believes that bounce back is a combination of the intestines absorbing more calories and the person getting bored with their eating plan and going back to old eating habits. He expects twenty pounds of bounce back regain on average. Bounce back is much harder to lose than it is to lose weight during the first years after surgery.

I am glad to hear. I also 5'2" and all I was told is that I should only get down to about 190 from the 284 that I started at. I feel a lot better because I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. I know I do y get enough protein and I skip meals sometimes. Thanks for the help to all of you for the great advice.
Interesting. From your highest weight to a normal BMI is 148 excess pounds (284-136). If your surgeon only expected you to lose 94 pounds, that is only 64%. I wonder why he thought you would only lose 64% unless that is the average for his patients. I was determined to lose it all and did.
Keep up the good work. Just keep following your plan.
