THIS is why you should not get drunk after WLS

So I know that everyone has different post-op plans...they vary from Dr. to Dr....I think pretty much all of them say don't drink alcohol for the first 6 months...mine said 1st year but I see 6 months alot...regardless...don't drink 3 months after surgery...this is why my fellow OH'ers. Saturday night was my 2nd time with alcohol post-op. My first experience was pleasent. got drunk FAST and sobered up FASTER. no sickness, no hangover..no problems. 2nd experience was not so pleasent. Drank Alsolut and redbull saturday night...about half a pint of vodka and probably 3 cans of redbull. Had to potty every 30 minutes. once again...drunk FAST and sobered up FASTER. Went to bed and woke up about 4:30 sunday morning feeling horrible. nauseaus stomach and all. From that time until 1:00 sunday afternoon I was in the bathroom...not vomiting b/c there was nothing in my stomach but my body did the motion...just kept spitting up foamy saliva. To say this as nice as possible...my 13 stools that day were 100% liquid. Finally i decided to drive myself to the urgent care...they don't do IV's btw...I knew I was getting dehydrated so I went in to get fluids because by this time, I could not keep anything in my stomach. So off to the ER i go. Passed out walking into the ER...spend 6 hours in there getting blood drawn and tests run. They gave me 3 liters of fluids and the conclusion was...the OUTRAGEOUS sugar in the redbull gave me the "dumping like" symptoms and made me dehydrated. the doctor @ the ER said he was surprised I had not had kidney failure already it was that severe.

wow.  I sure hope you're doing well now.  My nutritionist ok'd me for alcohol after 3 mths.  I'm not much of a drinker though.  At 3 mths postop i went out with the girls, but I only had one Mikes Hard Lemonade, and I sippped on that for 5 hours..only drank 3/4 of it by the end of the night..so it didn't effect me at all.

Eeeek - I hope you're feeling better!  I am SO happy I am past the drinking point in my life - it makes no sense to me nowadays.  And, I just don't get the mixing of vodka and this red bull stuff.  I mean, vodka and oj, vodka and cranberry juice or even diet coke..ok...this red bull stuff...ewww.

Anyway, glad you are ok - that must've been a scary experience!

I never was a big drinker even pre-op either. I would hardly consider 2 drinks "the drinking point in my life"...but thanks for the concern. Hopefully you will learn from MY mistake and don't make any yourself.

OMG!  girl, you need your kidneys!  why the combo of red bull and vodka?  one is an upper...one a downer...seems too opposite for me.  hope you are feeling lots better and remember to love your liver and kidneys!

I am  glad you are feeling better.  Also  I am really glad you posted this.  I am pretty new out and don't drink very much anyway, but my nut said three months for alcohol and vodka and Red Bull is my go to drink if I am going to have a drink.

NO vodka and redbull!!! I was not a big drinker pre-op either but margaritas and redbull go down SO much easier than my water or gatorade. Be VERY carefull of dehydration when you comsume alcohol. I will not drink ANYMORE. Learned my lesson the hard way. BTW, sever dehydration feels like death.!

Wow, yeah...guess we also learned that when you do drink again not to binge drink, eh? Glad you're ok.

Yeah MY sleeve won't let me drink OVER 2 drinks without vomiting and/or passing out and I LOVE to drink...this is by far what I hate MOST about my sleeve...oh well nothing I can do about it!
