Do you count caffeinated drinks towards your 'water' goals?

I've always read that for every oz of caffeinated beverage you drink, you need double the water to replace what is lost from the dieuretic effects of the caffeine.

I see people talking about drinking all their fluids in tea and coffee and am just curious?

it depends on who you ask.  I don't tend to count mine but I don't drink that much anyway. The above link says you can count them.

I take 40mg of Lasix (which is a much stronger dieuretic then caffeine) and don't have to increase my fluid (at least my surgeon never told me I need to) let alone double, triple or whatever it would relate to.  200 oz of water a day would seem quite unrealistic.

I dont drink any type of carbonated beverages but I drink a hot tea every morning and my NUT says to count it towards my daily water intake.

Thanks for the link and opinions!

I rarely meet my fluid intake requirements and have been beating myself up thinking now that I've added back some of the caff, I should increase them even more.

Maybe I will cut myself some slack!

I drink most of my fluids in the form of coffee, glorious coffee.  I also take a diuretic every day to keep my legs from swelling, and I have not had any issues with dehydration.  Caffeine is a mild diuretic in large quantities, but you build a tolerance to it over time.

I do count my iced coffee towards my water intake. But then again, I aim for 10 cups of water a day so I know I am at least getting in the regular 8 cups of water a day.

I count all fluids, coffee, tea, protein drinks, and milk included.  The diuretic effect of caffeine is grossly exaggerated from what I've read.  Heck, even water has a diuretic effect which is why they want you to push water when you're retaining fluid.

In addition to what you drink every day, you also get about 20% of your fluids from your food.  If you think about food like yogurt, or fruit, or anything with a lot of juice, it makes sense, doesn't it?

Yes. The diuretic effect is minimal if any at all.

The bulk of my water intake for the day comes from unsweetened ice tea and coffee.  That is one vice I'm not letting go of anytime soon.
