Struggling With Liquids
My post-op diet says to take a sip no more than once every 5 mins, but that I should be getting at least 64 ounces of liquids a day. Is this realistic? I feel like I can handle sipping more often and I'm never going to meet my daily goals this way.
It also says 5 mins between sips always and 10 minutes between bites of dense protein always after surgery. I know all doctors have different plans, but is this what you follow? I just feel like I'm going to spend my whole day eating and drinking.
I didn't start protein drinks until day 8, post op. I'm now 2 1/2 weeks out and it takes me 20 minutes to get down 5 oz of protein drink. Between four protein drinks a day, 90 oz water, a cup or two of broth AND timing my calcium and iron.....it's a freaking full-time job!
It does get easier though. I'm totally on plan and happy with my weight loss. I found the if my tummy feels a little overwhelmed, sometimes sucking on a chewable Gas-X helps it feel better. It will take a bit of time to get comfortable, but it will happen!
Hang in there :)
My plan had something similar for fluids, but I was one of the lucky ones who could pretty much get fluids down without any problem. I stuck to the dictated plan until I could see my Dr. at the first followup appt post surgery (10 days). My Dr. gave me the go ahead to just drink, drink, drink as much and as often as I wanted as long as there was no discomfort. I will say this, I did better with Syntrax Nectar Iced Tea shake and Unjury Chicken Soup the first week and a half post surgery. They went down well. After that, I could tolerate drinking Premier Protein Shakes...which have ended up being my favorite Protein shake. I still drink some sort of protein shake a day (either a Premier or Syntrax Nectar mix) to make sure I am well above my protein level. My Dr. is okay with this and feels it is a good idea considering my work schedule.
As far as eating dense protein, my plan calls for us to just to eat slowly and not eat longer than 30 minutes. Portions are to be measured or weighed. I am almost 3 months out and now eat 2 oz of dense protein. Takes about 20 minutes.
