Surgeon Thinks RNY is better for me???

I have done all the research on the Sleeve and I had my surgreon appointment and he thinks the RYN would be most successful for me.  I am currently 5'5 317lbs.  He said it was my decision but he doesn't think I will lose as much weight with the Sleeve.  Any advise would be great!  I don't know what to do.

I am 5'5"...43 yrs old...almost 4 years postop from the sleeve..have went from 354 lbs to 178 lbs. I have maintained for a few years now..never gained anything back. I lost 70 lbs in the first 3 mths postop...100 lbs loss by 5 mths 10 days..and 132 lbs was loss by 9 mths. You can absolutely lose the weight you need to with the sleeve. This is definitely YOUR decision..and he is just one person with an opinion. Do your research..and decide for yourself what you're willing to live with.  I didn't want lifetime malabsorption..or any rerouting of my intenstines. Ask your surgeon what size bougie he uses..i do think that will make a difference with your success with the sleeve (my opinion). My surgeon makes the stomachs very small and very tight..using a size 32. My restriction at almost 4 yrs postop is still great. I can eat no more than 3 oz of protein..and if i eat that..i have no room for anything else.

It is my understanding that the sleeve is roughly equivalent with the RNY for weight loss.  I had the sleeve last May and I've lost 172 pounds and I'm still losing weight.  Sometimes there are co-morbidities that cause doctors to recommend one procedure over another, but if its just about weight loss,  I suspect the sleeve will do the job for you.

best wishes,

Carol

DISAGREE with the comment about 'if you're not able to commit to one hour of exercise a day'. I had the sleeve...i haven't exercised in years..and i have never gained back any weight because of it. Also..with the RNY..that malabsorption is NOT lifetime..after a few years you are able to start absorbing all the calories from the food you eat. With the RNY that pouch they make is a stretchy part of your stomach..and has the ability of stretching out in time. I had the sleeve..and i have to avoid sugar..i start feeling ill after eating just a small amount of ice cream..or anything with too much sugar..so it's NOT just RNY that will help with that. And if someone isn't willing to change their eating habits..they will eat around any surgery...

To justpete:  Where, oh where are you getting

your information from??   have happily maintained a very low weight of 105 lbs. without exercise.  I do try to stay active throughout the day, but have yet to do any gym workouts or take any formal exercise classes.  You most definitely can maintain your weight without it.  Even though I agree that it makes you healthier, I feel that you made an irresponsible statement.

The sleeve can always be revised into the bypass, so if you aren't comfortable getting the bypass right now I suggest going for the sleeve.  Do what feels right to you!

Why does he think RNY is better for you?  If it's just a matter of weight loss, current research says that weight loss expectations are pretty much identical for VSG and RNY, so I don't think that's a valid concern.
