Milk and protein drinks count toward your total, but more is always better. You have to make drinking a full time job early on. Don't put that bottle down! I carried mine around for weeks and was able to get it all in by week 2-3.

Anything liquid counts. Sip the whole day long, except during and after eating. You need to do this until you are able to drink at a normal speed again. It won't take too long.

Dehydration is the number one cause of complications after surgery. Don't be a statistic.

Grim says it right on.  Sip sip sip all day long, just wait a bit before and after eating.  If you drink after a meal, you will probably HURT!  Best wishes!

The restriction to not drink prior to eating is a RNY restriction and doesn't apply to us.  I drink right up to the moment I start eating, no issues.

Liquids are liquids.  You can drink immediately after a protein shake or milk.

thank you for saying this! I drink a *lot* of water and thought I was cheating by drinking right before eating. I don't drink during or after, but I have been drinking before.

It doesn't matter for us RNY folks either. Since we have no pyloric valve, liquids go through us even faster than you. We can drink right up until the first bite.

I don't know how the 30 minute before rule got started, but it just keeps perpetuating itself, like straws and gum.

Interesting to know, thanks!  I'll chalk it up to yet another WLS urban legend.

I asked about the drinking rules and I was told it stretches our new stomach out and that is why we can't drink during or after our meals.  I struggle too with not drinking enough.  I used to consume most of my water during meals.

Right.  Our stomachs have limited space once we close the pyloric valve with dense food, so drinking during or immediately after a meal would just add volume to our already finite space.
