Would you have self paid?
Even knowing what I know now, I think I would have been too much of a wuss to self pay. I think that my fears of financial ruin if I'd had any complications would have prevented me from self pay. :( So I'm super thankful that I didn't have to consider that route, because I would have talked myself out of it and then I wouldn't be living the amazing life I'm living now.

I had insurance as a back up so if there were complications I was covered. I agree that if I hadn't had insurance as a back up then I may not have considered it. Thankfully, my husband got a new job with amazing insurance 3 weeks after my surgery and now all of my follow up testing have been covered 100%. I feel blessed that everything fell into place.
I'd still have feared that insurance would fight against paying for care for any complications for a procedure that wasn't covered. Since insurance companies can be punks like that :P

When surgery was first recommended 1 was 168 at 5'2" and never even contacted my insurance. I thought it was overkill, but had to go on insulin for diabetes. When I was at 208 pounds, I did qualify for surgery with the diabetes. If I knew then what I know now, I would have self-paid for the opportunity to stop the diabetes.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
Yes! I considered self pay even though I had insurance because I didn't want to wait 6+ months. Had done research on Mexican surgeons and picked one out, Dr. Fernando Garcia. I eventually decided to be patient and wait. Knowing what I know now -- that the surgery was relatively easy, I had no buyer's remorse and an easy recovery, and have reached a healthy weight -- absolutely!
