Diet before surgery approval?

So I'm not on a specific pre op diet, my surgeon was very vague about what I should be eating right now. All he said was a lot of protein, and no bread, rice or pasta. Is there anything else I should be doing? Is fat ok, or can I just stick to an Atkins diet? I was hoping he would give me a packet with like a number of carbs to stay below per day or a list of items I can eat....I guess I'm still probably too far out from a surgery date to start that? Please help....I'm starting to go from scared to excited!

I was on a 1200 calorie diet.  I could have 5 protein shakes/bars a day and one light meal - no carbs.  4 oz lean meat and 2 cups veg.  I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks.  Also stop soda habit.

Good luck

I had no specific pre-op diet until the liquid diet 10 days pre-op.  10 weeks before surgery I started swapping breakfast and lunches most days with protein shakes.  That worked well for me, since it helped to exercise willpower and discipline - two things that desperately needed exercising for me!

My forever diet is based on proteins, healthy fats, and avoidance of liquid calories, and processed and refined carbs.

I would call your surgeon's office (or the nutritionist he had you see) and clarify. Low carb/high protein is definitely what he's looking for, but you should clarify with them if you also need to be eating low fat (some surgeons require that pre-op), how many carbs per day they want you to have max, and if there's a maximum amount of calories you should be taking in. Every surgeon has different preferences, so no one here will really need to be able to answer this for you for sure. :) They're used to questions like this, and they'll be glad you're making sure you're compliant!
