Hi! Newly sleeved!

Hi everyone!

I've been lurking for a few months. I got sleeved on June 19th. I have a couple of things/questions:

  1. So far, I feel fine- no nausea or vomiting. Is that normal?
  2. My incisions are crazy itchy. I think I am allergic to the tape they used- I have hives. :/
  3. I'm taking a trip to see family at the end of this month. None of them know that I had surgery. There will be food everywhere. Should I play off not eating too much? I am praying that no one really notices....
  4. I mindlessly ate a piece of cauliflower today. I made dinner for my children and ate a piece of cauliflower. I know that I am supposed to take things slow and according to my doctor, but I feel fine.... is that normal?? I promise not to do it again.

Thanks for bearing through my post. I would appreciate any advice.

Best!

Abbi

  1. I never had one moment of nausea, so I think it's normal.
  2. My incisions itched terribly because of the tape. I had to take it off after a couple of days. It took longer for the rash to heal then it did for the incisions.
  3. You can play it off if you want to, but there will be someone who notices.
  4. I didn't have any veggies for 3 months after surgery, because my doc told me not to. Don't worry about it. If you were going to have a reaction to it, it would have happened fairly quickly.

Good luck with this wonderful trip you're starting, it's a wild and rewarding ride.

Hi Neesie57!

Thank you so much for your words!

These hives are nothing nice! No infection or warm to the touch- just hives and red.

I am going to visit my brothers. One of them or their wives will notice. Oyy. I will probably just tell them that my doctor has me on a strict diet... hopefully that will shoot down any questions/follow up questions!

I have an appointment with my doctor on friday, so I will talk to him about the cauliflower incident. Lol.

I haven't had my surgery yet so I can't comment on the normalcy of things afterwards but as for #3 I would just tell people I was on a strict diet. I'm on a diet 99% of the time I go to family functions anyway so I doubt anyone would even bat an eye. If you're not ready to tell them you had surgery that's what I would tell them. I mean it is true! Best of luck to you!

1 and 2, totally normal.

4, be more aware, please. It gets easier and easier to eat mindlessly as time goes on. It doesn't matter if it's cauliflower or chocolate. It's the not thinking about it part that will bite you on the butt.

#3. People don't care what we eat, or how much. Really. How much do you pay attention to what others are eating? If someone asks, you could just say "What, are you writing a book?" Or you could just tell them you had surgery. They'll figure it out eventually, anyway.

OH is doing crazy things with fonts today. I don't know why it's randomly changing fonts on me.

Throwing up is not normal; feeling good is normal.

You might tell family you're on a specific eating plan. They will notice.

one bite doesn't hurt but careful not to advance too quickly.

Welcome!

1 - it's not abnormal. I definitely never vomited and most people don't. I had a few waves of nausea, but they were quickly managed with zofran and hydration.

2 - call your surgeon ASAP. Ask if you can use/take benadryl or what you should do.

3 - If you don't want to tell people, that's certainly a choice but bet on someone noticing. Have a script - say you're recovering from a stomach bug and don't want to risk it. Or say that you ate earlier.

4 - it's normal to feel fine because, right now, your stomach is still healing so you wouldn't know if you'd damaged anything anyway. It might be wise to work on mindfulness so that you can try to rewire your brain from all the years of eating mindlessly.

Take care and, again, welcome!
