I know we don't approve the DS at all, so I don't think I can go that route.

Topic: RE: For those approved by insurance - please answer
I have been approved for banding, but my doctor and I still think VSG is the way to go. I just got my letter of denial from our Medical Review doc at BCBS of Alabama (my employer). Please respond with the name of any payers who approved the procedure. I need ammunition to go back at them again.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Topic: RE: Question for my aunt, describe recovery after vsg AND hiatal hernia repair
Thanks for asking this. I found out at my endoscopy that I have one that will need repairing during surgery too.

Topic: RE: got me a date, yup yup ;-) hehe
Congratulations. I got approved last Thursday for surgery on 3/6. The approval was for banding, but I'm still working to get the approval for the sleeve done. One way or the other, I'm having surgery on March 6th. Because of my failed staple line from 2 decades ago, he might not be able to complete the band, and have to opt for the RnY bypass instead. So, it's kind of weird. I'm on the schedule, but have no idea what I'm having. Oh well, life is an adventure, huh?

Topic: RE: how much does VSG cost???
My doc charges $14k for any of the surgeries - Band, RnY or VSG. In reality the sleeve should be less because it takes less time, and there isn't any appliance cost. like in the band. He said he just set a single price to make it easier. I don't think he wanted any price differential to be part of a patient's decision process.

Topic: RE: Size of Sleeve
Like someone posted in another thread. After you do the math, it appears that the difference in a 32 and 36 is just over a teaspoon.

Topic: RE: A EGD question
I had one last week, and the worst part about it was having to be there at 6:00 a.m. It really is a nothing procedure. You're down and then awake in about 5 minutes. They are able to reverse the sedation so well now that I could have driven myself home. Of course, they won't let you.

Topic: RE: Protein to blend
Did y'all find any (preferably unflavored) whey protein that tasted decent when blended with soups, broths, etc.? I just have a hard time choking down the stuff by itself.
Thx

Topic: RE: Posting on the Medifast Blog
I've done Medifast and Optifast mulitple times in the past, with very good results. That is, until I hit my goal and didn't go through the maintenance phase. I tried going back for my pre-op diet, but I just can't stand that soy protein taste any longer. When I walk in the place it hits me. I guess I've just become over-sensitized to it. I even bought some dry roasted endamame thinking that would be a good snack, but when I opened the bag, it hit me.
I'm switching to Nectar (whey based) to try and do the pre-op thing. After one glass, I can tell you that I don't love that either. Man, the liquid phase after surgery is going to be hard for me to get in the protein.

Topic: RE: Protein????
Someone posted on here before saying you couldn't absorb more than 30g at a time. Don't know the source for that info, though.

Topic: RE: To Addicted
If you feel this way, then you MUST get in a support program after surgery. The surgery is a tool, but it doesn't fix everything for you. Get some help to aid you in being compliant. When I talked to the doc at my psych evaluation, he told me that he didn't think I needed to come to one of the support groups there, but that I should know that it is available if I find that I need it.

Topic: RE: Anyone Size 48 Bougie?
My surgeon uses a 36. He believes the 32 has a greater chance of stricture at the incisura angularis. That's just one doc's opinion. The study that I've seen with the larger bougie indicated that they originally used a larger bougie, but have since gone down to a smaller size.

Topic: RE: Stoma Fix Procedure? On today's eps. of The Doctors
Most of the reports I've read over the last 6 months indicated that it might not be that successful.

Topic: RE: Feel like I just got ripped off
Luckily, mine was covered by our insurance's mental health provisions. He was a nice guy and actually asked some pertinent questions, but when it was over he said "I don't know why they make y'all do this. There's no need for it if you don't have any past mental health history, or any current issues."

Topic: RE: Waiting on VSG approval, but approved for band
Yeah, it didn't take them long to remove my response. She really irritated me, as you could probably tell. Nothing irks me more than someone who purports to be a scientist and then intentionally distorts a study's results to match their agenda. Anyhoo, thanks for the well wishes.

Topic: RE: How old is TOO old for WLS?????
Since Medicare will pay for WLS, obviously 51 is not too old. I'm 48, and although I feel like I've lost the past 10 years of my life due to MO, I plan on enjoying the remainder so I'm having surgery.

Topic: RE: Waiting on VSG approval, but approved for band
Being a BCBS employee, I just thought "what the heck" and sent an e-mail to our company president. I know that he has contacted the Dr. in Medical Review to discuss it, I just don't know the outcome yet. Either way, I'll work whatever tool I'm able to get, as I know this is likely my last chance at health.

Topic: RE: Waiting on VSG approval, but approved for band
Since my insurance doesn't cover VSG, my surgeon has submitted me for approval for banding, and it was immediately approved. I'm hoping the Medical Review folks at BCBS (my employer) approve my request to cover the sleeve, but either way, in 2 to 3 weeks I'll have some form of WLS. I would really prefer the sleeve, but I had stomach stapling in '81 that worked really well until the staple line broke down, so I know a restriction like the band can work for me. Of course, my metabolism was much better back then, but I can make it work.
My surgeon gave me his personal phone numbers to give to the Med Review doctor, so hopefully they'll talk and he can convince him that the sleeve is best for me.

Topic: RE: Horrifying?
Well, on the surface, if you tell someone that you are going to have 80-85% of your stomach cut out it does sound fairly horrifying. Not until you look into it does it start to make sense. Everyone has their own experiences and points of reference, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Topic: RE: A suggestion: Stop responding to the posts that say negative things about VSG. Let them fade away.
I think the problem is that your attitude almost makes it sound like you are rooting for non-DSers to fail so that you can be proven right. You really sound like a miserable person to me. Hey, but that's just my opinion.

Marshall, look up my post on here about the sample program from Syntrax. You get to try 11 different varieties for almost nothing.

Topic: RE: Help...I have my Upper GI in the morning!!!
I know someone who didn't heed their warnings about the water, and had to have an impaction removed. You don't want that.
Now, since I helped you, convince me to go have that colonoscopy done that I need. :-)

Topic: RE: Help...I have my Upper GI in the morning!!!
I had an upper GI two weeks ago, and an endoscopy last Friday. Both were a breeze. They will give you a fizzy alka-seltzer like sip to take that puts some gas in your stomach, just to make it easier to visualize. Then you'll be given barium to sip from a cup. It's kind of yucky, but much better than what I had to drink back in the 80's. They've really come a long way. It's all over in about 5 minutes.
When you get home, be sure to drink PLENTY of water to flush that barium through you. It can really set up if you don't.
It is really nothing to worry about.

Topic: RE: Denial: It ain't just a river in Egypt
So, according to posts on here, DSers heat a high fat diet and it is malabsorbed, and you're telling me you have no bouts with diahrrea? Ever? Unless that fat is evaporating into the mist, that's a lie.
BTW, I am pre-op and there's another reason I wouldn't have the DS. From the posts in this thread, the surgery obviously turns you into an a$$hole.
