Revision question from band

Has anyone been unable to revise to RNY do to scar tissues?? I met with the NP today and she was telling me this. I have not even thought about this but now I am concerned. She told me there is a percentage that are unable to revise and I may have to revise to the sleeve. If the band didn't work for me, I don't think the sleeve will either.

Thanks

If you see a specialist (like Dr. Keshishian in CA) you're better off. That being said, I do have too many adhesions right now and was unable to revise when I had my band removed. My surgeon told me that after I had a chance to heal, we could talk about the sleeve. It does what the band is SUPPOSED to, but rarely does.

That was over 6 years ago and I still have too much damage from having been banded, unfortunately. The makers of the band don't mention that, do they? They say it's "reversible"  but it's not. It's removable... but there's going to be a lot of damage in removing it for most people.

I wish you the very best and hope you can revise without issue. Find a surgeon who is experienced with scar tissue and band removal is my advice.

Good luck!

Have you considered the DS? I revised from the band to the DS. I knew I needed the malabsorption piece of WLS surgery. But, My esophagus was so messed up after my band. When you have the RNY my physician said when you eat it is just like with the band. That awful feeling in your throat/esophagus is where you feel full and not full in the stomach.
Also the DS has the best long term weight loss statistics and I didn't want to have to ever revise again.
Make sure you research all your options!
Good luck in whatever you decide!

The sleeve and RnY have similar results in terms of weight loss and co-morbidity resolution. The sleeve is a very metabolically active surgery because the part of the stomach that is removed is the part that makes most of our ghrelin. So, if you can lose with one, you should be able to lose with the other.

However, most people who have serious scar tissue from the band actually have a harder time getting a sleeve than RnY. This is because the band is placed right around where the bottom of pouch would be so you can cut the top off and make a pouch but a sleeve is a long, cylindrical shape and so the scar tissue from the band can make it difficult to make the sleeve.

Sounds like the NP is confused.

If a sleeve stomach is possible for you, than the DS will give you the restriction as well as malabsorption.  There are many successful revisions with great results.
