I stuck to a 1500-1800 calorie per day diet. I cut out as much of the "simple" carbs (pasta, bread, rice, etc.) and sugar as I could (in order to reduce hunger/cravings). Drink a lot of water - cut out soda.

Lost 107 lbs in 6 months. THOUGH, I did start at a very high weight so it comes off faster.

Yes, your surgeon should have provided you more info on guidelines.

Also- does your insurance require you seeing someone for a certain number of months (diet program) before they will approve? You might want to check before you dive into it much further.

For me: no cokes, no diet cokes, only whole wheat no other breads/refined stuff. I drink only water, decaf tea, decaf coffee. Had to get off the caffeine also. No sugar. Your sugars in anything you eat should be less than 10 grams.

no red meat or pork except for pork loin (it is leaner than the other kinds)

Fish, turkey, chicken, seafood pretty much is what I've eaten in 6 months.

Vegetables.

Greek yogurt

Log all of this in my fitness pal or other site.

I was told to get between 1400-1500 calories and 80+ grams protein a day.

Must drink 8 cups of water or decaf tea a day

 

 

I've lost 42 pounds- Dec will be my 6th month- awaiting my surgery date after insurance approval.

I'm sorry he didn't give you much to go on, but a lot of us have lost a good bit pre-op, so you came to the right place for advice.    I had a resting metabolic study done to help pick a calorie budget, then started logging religiously with MyFitnessPal. I started eating vegetables (for literally the first time in my life), prioritized protein, and while I didn't cut out carbs completely, I significantly reduced them. Exercise was also key for me. I started playing Dance Dance Revolution again, which on top of burning 600-900 calories an hour also kept me distracted so I didn't munch all evening. I bought a bike and started going for longer and longer rides too. I lost 80 lbs in the 7 months before my surgery, getting my BMI down from 50 to 37. My surgeon said that's why my surgery was so easy to perform and likely why my recovery was a breeze. Good luck to you!
