Make Walking Fun

You know walking is good for you, but perhaps it is a struggle to actually do it. Deciding to walk is the first step. Here are a few suggestions to help you take your second and third steps.

Join a walking club.
There is nothing better than having others to walk with, especially when you have a set time to walk each day. You may want to check what clubs are available in your community.

Start your own walking club.
If you are unable to find a walking club in your community, it may be time to start your own club. You can begin by posting a message on ObesityHelp.com asking others in your area if they would like to join your club. Make the club fun by designing a team t-shirt, creating a newsletter, or writing your own walking blog.

Walk with music.
Whether you use an MP3 or cassette player, listening to music while walking is not only relaxing, but it also helps make the walking time go by much more quickly. It is an investment that could assist you in reaching your walking goal. Walk with a good book. If you enjoy a good read but also value your exercise, take a book with you on the road in audio format. A wide variety of audio books are now available from subscription programs (such as audible.com) that can be loaded into your MP3 player. Pick a book you will love, and only allow yourself to listen to it while you are walking.

Walk your dog.
If you do not have a dog, you may want to borrow the neighbor’s dog. Old Spot is a great excuse to get in better shape. If you don’t want to walk for yourself, then do it for man’s best friend, who will be most grateful for the chance to get out.

Make a walking goal.
Goals are great sources of motivation. Start by walking 15, 20 or 30 minutes a day and gradually increase your walking five minutes at a time. You will not only feel terrific, but you will see that you can walk farther and longer than you thought!
