Medicaid
A Personal Prospective

Sarah,  from our ObesityHelp.com Member Services department, shares how Medicaid changed her life.

"At one time, I weighed over 500 pounds and was receiving SSI, Medicaid, and food stamps. During this time I had several co-morbidities that required medical treatment. Medicaid covered my high blood pressure and sleep apnea medications, as well as weekly physical therapy appointments for severe lymphedema. For a period of four years, I had many hospitalizations for cellulitis. This hospitalization occurred generally every 2-3 months where I was treated with IV antibiotics and then follow-up care with home-health nursing care.

With the help of my doctor and Medicaid, I had gastric bypass surgery in 2003. Medicaid covered the cost of my gastric bypass surgery, as well as my follow-up and nutrition appointments. Since that time I have maintained a 150 pound weight loss. I no longer require medication for high blood pressure or sleep apnea. I no longer have weekly physical therapy appointments and I haven't been hospitalized for cellulitis since 2004. My health has improved tremendously!

Medicaid helped me when I needed it the most and now I'm glad to say that every day I get to pay-it-forward. I went back to school and finished my Bachelor's degree in English. I also pursued a newly found passion of mine from dealing with so many medical issues! I went back to school for Health Services Administration. The entire time I was in school, I also held multiple jobs.

I currently work full-time during the day and part-time at night! I have been off all public assistance since July 2004. Medicaid not only saved my life, it improved my overall well-being and allowed me to become a contributing member of society. One of my jobs, since 2004, has been working in the Member Services Department at ObesityHelp.com. I love to help members navigate the approval process and to fully understand their insurance benefits.   Many like me, never imagined that getting coverage for WLS was even possible."- Sarah
