How did your WLS impact your autistic child?

Hi everyone - I was lucky enough to stumble upon this forum, I didn't know it existed 5 minutes ago . I have a 12 year old son with PDD NOS/ Aspbergers, depending on which specialist you ask. I had my surgery on 7/12/04 and so far have lost 50.5 lbs . My son and I discussed the surgery extensively before, and other than him thinking that I would come home from the hospital skinny, he seemed to have a good understanding of what would happen. I was in the hospital for 2 days and have had absolutely no complications, thank God. My son's behavior has been off the wall inappropriate. I'm sure most of us in this forum know what that's like- inappropriate language, revisiting issues that were settled long ago, reverting to childish behaviors, etc. He's driving me crazy . And now the icing on the cake, 2 teachers at my son's school told me he is obsessing on another student with inappropriate behavior. Oh joy . A few years ago in 5th grade, my son began having similar issues but was able to verbalize what the problem was. He was mainstreamed all thru elementary school, and in the 5th grade, the academics became just too hard and were going ahead too fast for him. So more pull-out/SPED time was arranged, and we did short term medication (Risperdal) and he was fine. Here we are 2 years later, the same behaviors are creeping in, yet my son is unable to verbalize the problem or help himself. We are going back to the psychologist who helped us a great deal the last time things got out of hand. Risperdal is no longer an option for my son because he gained a lot of weight last time and tends to be heavy anyways. Well, I guess I just needed to get it all off my chest . Any advice appreciated, and thanks for listening . Mea

Mea, My kids are pretty young I don't think they really even noticed I had surgery to tell the truth. As for the behaviors could it be that he just went back to school? Trasition problems? We are dealing with that right now with my little girl who is 3 years old w/ Autism. She just started back to pre-school. I hope they can adjust his meds. I have heard that kids have put weight on with that med that he was on. Hugs to you Mea!! I'm an Email away if you ever want to chat!! Kristin
