Running: any tips on pushing through?

I started Ease Into 5k 8 weeks ago and have been stuck for about a week. I did the 20 minute run twice (not consecutively, sadly) but I just keep getting stuck at 15 minutes. Its like I hit 15 and my calves are screaming at me to stop and I just havent been able to push myself through this funk. I feel like its a running mindf*ck. Is this normal? Any tips to help out?

Sometimes pushing through a wall is purely mental if everything else is in place.  If hydration and energy level are not an issue then sometimes you just have to take control of your brain and shut the inner voices down.

I can honestly say with very few exceptions I have yet to do a run and at some point just want to stop, but I know the accomplishment of not stopping will last much longer than the temorary relief of stopping.

When all else fails and I know I am not fighting any issues other than mental the "Fat Boys Quit" Mantra pulls me through.

This was helpful in so many ways. I was able to run 2.3 miles in 27 minutes today (slow, but I didn't stop!) and you're mantra definitely pulled me through.

When I hit the 15 minute mark I pushed myself to finish 20 and at 20 I started thinking of your mantra and the absolute joy of finishing the run strong was so amazing!

I did a few things differently...I tried to drink more water before going to bed last night, I ate half a banana about half an hour before running and I changed my running clothes to something a little cooler (temperature-wise).

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Are your calves screaming in PAIN or exhaustion?

Sometimes you have to suck it up, but if it's pain, you might have an injury, need to stretch, etc.

Sue brings up a good point.

You have to learn the difference between what PAIN really feels like versus exhaustion and general soreness.

Pain is take a step back and recover see the doc and get the pain dealt with.  The other things you will feel that aren't pain are the ones you push through.  I does take time in learning the difference but not knowing what real pain feels like you can do some real damage.

Its not pain, more like tightness. I know now that its just mental...though tiredness and hydration are definitely contributing. I run at 5 am and cant physically drink enough before to not feel thirsty during. I think Friday Im going to take it back outside if the weather cooperates...treadmill blues are bogging me down.

Thanks for the help!

One of my workouts with the personal trainer is early morning so I load up on water the night before.  I work 4pm - 1am and work out at 9am.  I drink 64oz while at work and then a protein shake on the way to the gym.  (and at least 1 (16oz) bottle of water while at the gym)
