Should I Take Yoga Class or Wait???

I'm 6 weeks out from VSG, and my primary physician recommended I try yoga due to lack of flexibility and poor posture (my surgeon has also cleared me for exercise).  I found a groupon for a nearby yoga studio, and got really excited….but then realized I'm 250 pounds!  Should I wait until I've lost more?  Has anyone been in this predicament or am I just overreacting?  I don't want to cause injury due to my size, and of course I'm worried about taking classes with stick thin people!!!  Thanks for your feedback! :)

I would.  Yoga is awesome.  :)  I started doing yoga post-op when I weighed 270 and I haven't injured myself.  I took a moment to talk to my teacher at the beginning and said, "hey, I'm new to this and I'm obese."  My teacher assured me that I'd be fine and is good at pointing out modifications to poses when necessary.  I've been doing yoga since May and my body is SO happy with it.  I'm so much more flexible and it has helped my muscles through all of my other exercise as well.  In fact, I think yoga is one of the main reasons I haven't gotten injured!

And there are people of all body types in yoga.  Stick thin people need to exercise too...

Thanks GwenMo! I bit the bullet and took my first class tonight!  I was so nervous all day and almost backed out, but I'm so glad I didn't! I think it's one of the best decisions I have made and look forward to more classes.  There were definitely all body types there.

Awesome!  Yoga is seriously one of the best things in my life.  I use it for stretching after I run and then on days I don't run and it's the best.  :D  I go to classes when I can and, when I can't, I use an Apple app called YogaStudio that is fantastic - but I only started using it after I had a solid foundation from the classes since there's nothing like having an instructor to help you out and correct you on any form problems you might have!

I have not found this to be the case.  Diet is for weight loss.  Yoga and exercise are for overall health, strength, and other good things.
